About Blackademia
What is this event?
Blackademia
On November 9th and 10th, 2024, at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, Ontario, the Black Researchers of Southwestern Ontario (BRSO) initiative will convene for the first time to share space and stories at “Blackademia,” the BRSO’s inaugural UnConference.

The BRSO was formed to support the new critical mass of Black scholars in the region while bolstering the long-standing contributions of Black research/ers; to establish safe and generative environments for Black researchers to thrive; to reimagine what cross-institutional collaboration can look like; to challenge the myth of equity and systemic alienation in Canadian institutions; and to cultivate spaces of Black joy and celebrate as a collective the valued research contributions that Black scholars have made.

“Blackademia” is a gathering for Black researchers working on or in the region of Southwestern Ontario, including Black scholars, Black students at graduate, undergraduate, and postdoctoral levels, as well as Black policymakers and Black community leaders, activists, and artists.

Program announcements will be added over the coming weeks!

Dr. Harris’ research explores the way technology can support the well-being of people as they age from a Human Factors perspective focusing on design for aging; digital health; health and racial equity; and the technology lifecycle. As the director of the Well-Tech Research & Design Laboratory, she leads a team who collaborates with researchers across the world to ensure the integration of interdisciplinary approaches and thinking from diverse fields (e.g., community health, design, engineering, gerontology, leisure, psychology, and social justice).
